Simpson McCreath Trust award local projects with much-needed grants

24/08/2017

Berwick-upon-Tweed's Simpson McCreath Trust announce over £10k has been awarded to four local projects.

Reflecting the interests of the trustees, the trust has awarded the grants to local projects doing great things in the areas of culture and sport.

The Northern Soul Kitchen, a community project that take donations of unsold, edible food from local shops and suppliers and turn them into healthy, affordable meals for everyone, has received a £3,900 grant. This will be used to start up workshops for young people in the community with additional support needs and will teach them about reducing food waste, heathy eating and basic kitchen and cooking skills.

A donation of £5,100 has been made to Inspired!, a music project aimed at young people, aged 12 - 20 in Berwick and Northumberland that delivers workshops on songwriting, production and performance, gives training on marketing, promotion, voice coaching, rehearsals and more. Further to this, the project, started in December 2017, has helped to develop the confidence and wellbeing of the young people that have already taken part.

Receiving £2,500 the Chirnside Chasers, a not for profit charity that aims to promote and advance athletics as a competitive sport while also providing recreational facilities, will now be able to purchase some much-needed high jump equipment.

A further £1,100 has been donated to the Cornhill Village Christmas Lights project for 2017, and will be spent on new lights for the area for the festive period.

Speaking about the latest donations Trust Board Member David McCreath OBE said: "As a trust we pride ourselves on supporting projects, activities and causes in the local area that benefit all parts of the community - from sport to culture and learning for young people. Our donations go a long way to improving facilities and increasing resources, and we hope to continue giving to many more worthwhile causes.

The charitable arm of family-owned maltster Simpsons Malt, the Simpson McCreath Trust supports a wide variety of organisations in the borough of Berwick-Upon-Tweed, particularly with small donations for specific local projects.
