EASTERN SECTION DINNER 2017

Eastern Section’s Annual Dinner Robinson’s College 30th March 2017.

The section’s annual celebration saw 120 BFBi members and guests treated to a fantastic evening of food, friendship and entertainment. As always the six course meal was of the highest quality and guests were treated to an excellent selection of paired beers with each course.

The section would like to pass on particular thanks to the following beer sponsors:

Adnams
Fullers
GreeneKing
Harviestoun
Marstons
Oakham Ales
Wild Beer
Woodfordes

The Chairman’s charity this year was BLISS; a UK charity working to provide the best possible care and support for all premature and sick babies and their families.  The chairman spoke about his family’s personal experience of the charity and the importance of the work that they do.  The evening’s charitable donations raised over £1,300 for the charity, with the envelopes used as raffle tickets for the prize draw.  The chairman would like to extend his personal thanks to the generosity of everyone attending and to the committee members for their raffle prize donations.

The guests were then invited to become airline pilots for the evening by guest speaker, David Gunson.  David who was an ex RAF pilot and air traffic controller talked us enjoyably through the ups and downs of our short lived pilot career!

The evening was rounded off with a number of presentations.  The section had reintroduced their indoor cricket matches who this year saw Muntons “B” team triumph; George Irving collected the trophy on the winner’s behalf.  There was also a special Chairman’s presentation made to David Green to celebrate his 44 years service to the malt industry.  The award, acknowledging his retirement in August this year, was an engraved tankard which was promptly filled with his favourite tipple; lager tops!

The final act of the evening was the handing over of the section jewel along with a change of office as Richard Howe passed on the baton to Simon Wallace.  The Chairman would like to once again the committee for their help and support over the previous two years and wish Simon all the very best for his time in the chair.

EASTERN QUIZ - Tuesday 8th November 2016
Victory Sports ground BSE

A new venue welcomed the annual quiz grudge match between the trade and the brewers.  With over 50 entrants and the majority of them being made up from the trade both new and old faces, the scene was set for a strong showing from last year’s losers.  The single brewers team were going to face an up hill struggle.

Our resident Quiz master, Mr Alan Pateman, set a range of high level questions throughout the evening, ably assisted by Mr George Irving in collating and keeping the scores.

The end result; yet another brewers win!  A good night was had by all.

The Eastern Section Committee would like to extend their thanks to Alan Pateman, for preparing and running the Quiz, George Irving for assisting and last but not least Julie Dunger for running the bar and preparing the evenings supper.  Thanks also to Kit Wells for sponsoring the winners “bonus”.  Finally we would also like to thank Openfield for sponsoring the venue and supper.

This year’s Chairman’s Charity was the Motor Neurone Disease Association (www.mndassociation.org).  Rob Sanderson of Member Company Openfield spoke about the Association and received a cheque of £2,130 from the proceeds of the raffle.  Thanks go to all who so generously donated.

Other presentations, on the night, included the new cricket trophy (to Kit Wells MBE, representing the BFBi Barbarians); a medal to Mike Norfolk, Muntons for sausage consumption and, last but very much not least, Life Membership to Alan Ridealgh, Muntons, in recognition of his significant contribution to BFBi Eastern Section.

The Eastern Dinner is enjoying an upsurge in attendance.  It is hoped that next year’s dinner, being held on 30th March 2017, can exceed 200.  If it does, there may well be some extra entertainment for those attending…..

BFBi five a side 24 November 2015

7 Gents teams and 2 ladies teams took part in the annual Championship held at Debenham Sports Centre.  After 2 ¾ of what can only be described as intense football action, Nidera B team ran out as eventual winners of the mens league with the Nidera All Star ladies/boys under 10 squad taking the honours.  Worthy of special mention were the heroic goalkeeping skills of Mike Norfolk from Muntons who threw himself about with reckless abandon for the cause.

As usual these events come down to the attendees and volunteers without whom we could not operate.  Special thanks to Amos Green for Referring, Simon Wallace for devising the order of play schedule.  A very big thank you to Nidera and Openfield for sponsoring the event.

Eastern Section Quiz Night 2015

The annual Eastern Section BFBi quiz night took place on Tuesday 10th November 2015 at Greene King’s brewery tap.  The annual event which attracted over 50 participants saw quiz master Alan Pateman pose questions to the 10 teams. With 6 Traders teams and 4 brewers teams, one of which was borrowed from the traders number, made the points scoring less straightforward than usual.  The result on the night was so close that in the end it was decided by the toss of a coin.

Eastern Section would like to extend their thanks to Greene King and Craig Bennett for hosting the event, to Boortmalt for sponsoring and to Alan Pateman for being an excellent Quiz master.
