Western Section Review of Events

22nd September saw another enjoyable dinner, Chaired by Will Rogers, Sales Director of Charles Faram.

Members and their guests were accompanied by, the now traditional, harpist Angharad James during pre dinner drinks.  A new format was trialled, less formal, foregoing the “clapping in” of top table guests and toastmaster.  Feedback following the event showed that tradition was still valued and a return to a Top Table and toastmaster is on the cards for 2018.

Andy Robinson provided the entertainment, ably supported by Ben Adams of Charles Faram (Ben, don’t give up your day job….).

Thanks go to Brains and Bath Ales who provided beer.

Another new tradition, the cheeseboard, was stunning and provided extra sustainance for those who continued the evening after the formalities had finished.

The reinvigorated beer and cider scene in Bristol has led to a new venue being researched for 2018 – watch this space….

To view photos from the event go to the BFBi website, gallery page.

Due to ground works at Ross on Wye Golf Club, the Pig & Fish Invitational Golf Day was cancelled.  The new date for the 2018 calendar is 5th September 2018.

Western Section Banquet 2016

Around 100 BFBi members and their guests gathered at Tortworth Court, Gloucester, on the evening of the 16th September for the Annual Western Section Banquet.

Prior to dinner attendees sampled beers from S A Brain and Co, Bath Ales and Hall and Woodhouse and enjoyed the beautiful background music from harpist Angharad James.

Will Rogers, of Charles Faram and Co, oversaw the dinner. His guest speaker Tony Hawks entertained all with a humorous and lively speech and engaged with many members of the audience. Thanks to Charles Faram and Co for sponsoring the guest speaker.

The raffle prizes were then won by Michael White - Tortworth Court voucher, Crisp Maltings whiskey - Alex Duckworth and Bottle of Sipsmith Gin - Christine Bouvée. Thanks to Tortworth Court and Crisp Maltings for the kind donation of the raffle prizes. The raffle raised £438 for Tony Hawks’ chosen charity ‘The Moldovan Child Care Centre’.

Guests then made their way back to the auditorium to dig into the beautiful cheese board and port selection and enjoy the last of the remaining beer.

Thank you to all who attended the dinner and we look forward to welcoming you back to Tortworth Court next year

After a delicious lunch the golfers headed back out to play 18 holes. Ready for the club’s final games, the course looked particularly stunning this year.

Western Section Banquet - October 2014

Western Section held their Annual Banquet at their, now established, venue of Tortworth Court Hotel on Friday 3rd October.  The new timing of the event meant that the hotel setting, within an arboretum, ensured stunning views as the autumn colours were setting in on the trees, to compliment what is a very comfortable hotel and setting.

Nigel Gibbons, Crisp Malting Group, as new Section Chairman, put his mark on the dinner by inviting Guest Speaker Simon Hughes to entertain the audience.  Simon was a fast bowler for Middlesex and later Durham taking over 750 wickets and winning 4 county championship titles and 5 limited overs trophies. He is perhaps best known on TV as 'The Analyst' first on Channel 4's ground breaking test match coverage and now on Channel 5's highlights programme.    Simon’s stories of his run-ins with well-known names such as Ian Botham, Geoffrey Boycott proved entertaining, even to those not well versed in cricket.

Ray Wilson, Managing Director of Off Zero and Past Section Chairman (for the second time) added to his medal collection by receiving his Past Section Chairman’s medal.

The piece de resistance of the evening, catering wise, has become the cheese and port, served in the Atrium after the dinner.   This year was no exception with a very splendid stilton and range of cheeses and port (sponsored by Crisp Malting Group).

Thanks go to the suppliers of beer for the evening:  Brains; Hall & Woodhouse; Wadworth and Wickwar breweries and sponsors of the evening Brandels; Crisp Malting Group; Off Zero and Hallamshire

Following the generosity of attendees to the Annual Banquet, Section Chairman, Nigel Gibbons, presented a cheque for £400 to Daniel Thorington of St Elizabeth Hospice Ipswich.

If you want to guarantee good weather on a day off, book the same day as Western Section Pig & Fish - again, the sun shone (shame it did not always translate into the playing prowess of the golfers).

The morning’s competition (singles medal, over 9 holes) was won by Andrew Courtneay of Courtenay Ltd.  Second was Andrew Rawcliffe, Heineken, guest of Sealed Air and a close third was Craig Carter,Graphic Packaging .
