Brewing Heritage Meets Innovation – BFBi Visits Black Sheep Brewery
October 1st, 2025

The BFBi’s Yorkshire tour continued on October 1st with a visit to one of the UK’s most iconic independent breweries—Black Sheep Brewery, nestled in the market town of Masham, North Yorkshire.

Founded in 1992 by Paul Theakston, Black Sheep is a brewery built on both tradition and rebellion. After breaking away from his family’s long-standing brewing business, Paul transformed Masham’s old maltings into a new kind of brewery—one that would honour classic methods while challenging the status quo. Over three decades later, that spirit still runs through every pint.

The BFBi group was warmly welcomed and taken on a guided journey through the brewery’s operations. From the use of Dales spring water and English hops to the iconic Yorkshire Square fermenters, Black Sheep’s process is steeped in heritage, yet continually evolving to meet the modern beer drinker’s palate.

Attendees got a close-up look at the craft behind favourites like the award-winning Best Bitter and the rich, full-bodied Riggwelter, as well as newer seasonal and craft-style brews. The tour highlighted how Black Sheep seamlessly blends old-school brewing with contemporary flair, all while staying fiercely independent.

Following the tour, the group enjoyed a beer at the bar and some excellent food at the brewery’s on-site bistro. Set within the brewery’s vibrant visitor centre, the space offers not only great food and drink, but a clear window into the brewery’s passion for community and Yorkshire hospitality.

The visit was a testament to the enduring legacy of British brewing and the value of independence in an ever-changing industry. It was inspiring to see how Black Sheep continues to innovate while staying true to its roots—a balance many breweries strive for, but few achieve so naturally.

Huge thanks to the Black Sheep team (Alan our tour guide, and Kevin Paddison, Keystone Brewing Group Technical Services Manager for hosting us)  for an informative and thoroughly enjoyable visit, and for flying the flag for independent British brewing.
