European Brewery Convention 2009

The 32nd bi-annual Congress took place 10th – 13th May 2009 in Hamburg, Germany. The 32nd Congress was held in the CCH – Congress Center Hamburg – right in the heart of the city. In the past the Congress has been held in Prague and Venice.

The European Brewing Convention (EBC) is the expert technical organisation for co-operation and joint activity between European brewers and maltsters.  It is also the scientific and technological arm of The Brewers of Europe who represent the European brewing sector.  Current members are the national brewers associations from EU Member States, plus Norway, Switzerland and Turkey.
The Congress, a biannual event, attracts the largest amalgamation of technical and R&D personnel in Europe.  Thus, participation ensures dialogue and profile with the largest group of  industry decision makers and leaders throughout Europe within the brewing technical and research sector.
2009 saw the 32nd Congress, a peripatetic event, held, for the third time, in Germany and hosted by the German Brewers Association (Germany currently has 1200 breweries producing more than 5,000 brands of beer).
Alongside the scientific and technical programme, an exhibition of suppliers to the industry was held.  It was within this exhibition that BFBi organised, with the financial assistance of UK Trade & Industry, a group of UK exhibitors.  6 UK companies recieved grant funding from UKTI.
The Congress is not a stand alone exhibition.  Exhibitors benefit from the 3 – 4 days of networking with delegates, both during the programme, lunches, exhibition time and social activities.  This form of marketing is quite specialised and companies new to participating in Convention/Congress formats should take advise regarding the marketing skills needed pre, during and post the event.
The next convention will take place 22nd-26th May 2011 at SECC Glasgow, UK. More details will be annouced late 2009

drink technology India 08

drink technology India was held 27-28 November 2008 in Mumbai, India.

This was the second time the convention had been held and was destined to be a success however; it was faced with very special challenges due to the events that happened in Mumbai during the
opening day of the convention.

After discussion drink technology India remand open on both days of the convention. It was left explicitly to the exhibitors and delegates whether they wished to participate in the event further.

As a result of the situation in Mumbai on the days of the event, the expectations of drink technology India 2008, which had been extremely high due to the pre-registration figures and publicity in Indian, German and International press, could not be met to the extend expected.

Three UK BFBi Member companies attended as exhibitors and with the assistance of UK Trade & Investment two received grant funding.

services and explore the market opportunities available via the exhibition as well as marketing themselves to prospective customers.

European Beer Festival

British Pavilion goes to the 1st European Beer Festival held in Copenhagen!

The first European Beer Festival in Copenhagen was held between 12-14 September 2008. BFBi and British Beer Exports took 24 UK Brewers out to the Beer Festival held in the Carlsberg Distribution centre just outside central Copenhagen. The Festival was supported by UK Trade and Investment with 14 brewers receiving grant funding to attend.

A British Beer Tasting Showcase was held the evening prior to the opening of the festival at the Residence of the British Ambassador, David Frost. Brewers offered tasting of their beers to the British Ambassador and several invited guests from Denmark and surrounding countries. A selection of British Cheese was also given to accompany the beautiful British beer.

The festival saw not just Danish brewers but a selection from across Europe in attendance however the British Pavilion stand was the largest by far showcasing 54 different cask beers with a diverse collection of bottled beer on sale too! There was also a selection of British Cheese on offer, provided by Milk Link Cheese Co, Long Clawson Dairy Ltd and Ilchester Cheese Co Ltd this was very well received and was in high demand with the beer.

Two member companies Advanced Bottling UK Ltd and Murphy & Son Ltd attended and took a space on the British Pavilion stand.

The festival organisers have reported over 20,000 people attend the festival during the three days.

Congratulations go to Thornbridge Brewery for being the first to empty a cask; Japiur was a truly excellent beer. Also Harveys & Sons specially packaged a beer named ‘Prince of Denmark’ for the festival which was in high demand and sold out by the end of the first day!

Special thanks go to Janet Witheridge of British Beer Exports as well as to Iain Russell, Andy Moore and staff of Charlie’s Bar who looked after the cask ale during the set up and duration of the show they also made me and the entire British group feel welcome in Copenhagen. (If you are planning a visit to Copenhagen you must visit Charlie’s Bar a true export of British Beer presented in the best way) also thanks to Nick Sharpe of OnePint for his help. I would also like to thank all the brewers who attended and served beer for the duration and helped with the serving of the cheese.

We hope to attend the Beer Festival in the future for it was an enjoyed and well networked event for all those involved.
