Beer Keg Standardisation in South Africa


The following points highlight the key action points related to the project undertaken to research  that finally resulted in the standardisation of beer kegs across the supply chain of beer in kegs in South Africa.

  • In December 2014 the Beer Keg Group team, made up of Engineering Consultants and John Cluett, carried out an investigation into the use of Beer Kegs in South Africa with a view of complying with the South African Pressure Regulation Requirements (PER) in this industry through the South African Department of Labour (DoL).  
  •  Communication was established with the following organisations during 2014 to 2016 to review international standards, guidelines and best practices.
  • IBD (Institute of Brewing & Distilling). The IBD examination syllabi describe the educational material used to assess knowledge in this environment.
  • The first contact was made with Simon Jackson, CEO IBD, London. It was suggested by Simon to John, that contact be made with Ruth Evans, CEO of BFBi.  IBD has been kept informed on progress throughout this project.  
  • BFBi (British Food & Beverage Industry Suppliers Association, BBPA (British Beer Pub Association), SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers). Ruth Evans, CEO of BFBi, has supplied valuable information regarding standards, procedures and training in UK and Europe compiled in collaboration with their stakeholders. Ongoing communication between Ruth Evans and John Cluett has been carried out throughout this project.
  • Brewers of Europe. John Brauer, General Secretary, has given information regarding DIN standards used in this environment.
  • DIN 6647- 1, “Means of packaging Cylindrical beverage containers”, Part 1: “Allowable operating pressure up to 3 bar, nominal volume up to 50 litres”. This version in English has been obtained from the publishers and used as the basis for the standard now applied in South Africa. This was published in the Government Gazette No 40713 of 24 March 2017.
  • US Brewers Association has issued performance guidelines for refillable and single use kegs and draught beer quality. Signatories to these guidelines are: Anheuser-Busch InBev, MillerCoors, New Belgium Brewing Company. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, Brewers Association, Draught Beer Guild, Micromatic Inc., and others in the US brewing industry.  Ongoing communication between USBA and John Cluett has been carried out throughout this project.
  • Brewers Association of Australian & New Zealand Inc. has issued dispense system installation guidelines. AS 2971-2007 “Serially produced pressure vessels”, is an Australian standard that covers beer kegs.
