H. Erben Ltd, (founded in 1951 by entrepreneur Harry Erben and now part of the Berlin Packaging family) has over the years, developed & diversified to become a specialist in a range of glass, closures & machinery for the bottling and packaging industry.
In September 2019, we (Saxon Packaging) received an enquiry from H Erbens Stacy Green for a drinks gift packaging solution to house two 70cl bottles of Canmore single malt Scotch whisky from the premium distillers Charles Edge London. Our Internal Sales Co-ordinator Kelly Phipps and in-house design team worked closely with Stacy to produce two stunning gift packaging solutions.
Recognising the value of premiumisation within the drinks industry and how packaging can influence buyer behaviour, both designs were printed using the litho printing process. Creating a Hi-Res photo-quality finish they were embellished further with the application of a matt film laminate, spot gloss UV and foil-blocking.
Although we have manufactured many premium single bottle whisky gift packaging solutions before, this project was particularly challenging, mainly due to factors involving the colouring and the artwork print file.
“The print design called for multiple shades of Grey, which in printing for the litho CMYK process is tricky (due to the intricacies involved in colour matching spot colours to CMYK). Nevertheless, it is still manageable to do,” explained Ben Watson, our Technical & Design Manager.
In addition to the colour challenges, Sam Rowe (our Print & Artwork Co-ordinator) faced artwork challenges during the design process. “We needed to have a lot more input than usual on the setting up of the artwork file. The design house, who were handling this packaging design for the client, had not designed a job of this complexity before, and therefore required support from us in order to create the print file. Whether working directly, with an agency or independent designers, we (Saxon Packaging) are always here to help our customers with their packaging artwork designs,” said Sam.
With an initial order of 5000 units for each design, feedback from the customer has been very positive and we hope to manufacture more types of luxury drinks gift packaging solutions like this for H Erben in the future.
