National Certificate in Cellar Service Installation & Maintenance (NCCSIM)

Qualification for Cellar Service Engineering Sector

BFBi, with the assistance of Member companies, has developed a qualification for the Cellar Service Sector. The Level 2 Technical Certificate has also been developed in association with the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), who act as the the official awarding body, BIIAB.

Why was the qualification developed?

The BIIAB Level 2 Technical Certificate in Cellar Service Installation and Maintenance (NCCSIM) was developed to help satisfy the current demand for qualifications at this level for cellar service engineers. The NCCSIM has become the recognised quality minimum standard in this specialist field, particularly in regards to gas installation.

What does the qualification cover?

The qualification is divided into five units covering five key subject areas:

  • Unit 1 - Health and Safety and Survey of the Cellar
  • Unit 2 - Properties of Beer and Beer Dispense Equipment
  • Unit 3 - Cellar Service Equipment
  • Unit 4 - Service Installation
  • Unit 5 - Dispense Pressure Systems
  • Unit 6 - Practical Assessment*

*Required for candidates without requisite minimum experience or job role.

Who is the NCCSIM for?

The NCCSIM is aimed at for those working or planning to work, as a cellar engineer within the below listed establishments, or, any other venue that has a cellar requiring an engineer.

What are the benefits of the NCCSIM?

The NCCSIM sets a national standard for all cellar engineers. Successful candidates receive an individual certificate for each unit passed and an over-arching certificate upon completion of all five units.

Following successful completion of units, engineers can apply for their identification card, providing a licence to practice and confirmation of competence to the customer.

Where is training available?

We are currently utilising the following venues for training, and are in discussion with several others to increase geographical accessibility:

How long will it take and what are the costs?

NCCSIM refresher training has been designed to be delivered in five, one day modules. Whilst it is intended that each unit be delivered in a one day session, candidates would be expected to have already gained practical experience. An examination is taken at the end of the training day.

The cost for each unit is £160.00+VAT per unit, with an additional £100.00+VAT due to cover registration with the exam board, resulting in the entire qualification costing only £900.00 + VAT.

Included in the cost is the registration and examination from BIIAB, the relevant unit reference material (binder if the 1st unit) and the training day at one of the nominated venues including examination and feedback of results. (certificate if applicable)

How is the learning assessed?

Each unit is assessed by a multiple-choice question examination. The number of questions and length of the examination varies depending on the unit.

Upon registering, you will receive you first unit reference material within a binder, this information should be studied and is the basis for the examination. When you register to attend each unit thereafter you will be sent the relevant unit reference material.

Who are the trainers?

BFBi has appointed trainers from the industry to cover the five units. These are people who have been in the Industry for many years with a wealth of experience. For full details on who the trainers are please contact BFBi.

Future plans?

The NCCSIM will be developed to adapt to the changing industry we are in. BFBi, in partnership with CSCS, have introduced identification cards stating which units the candidates has completed.

BFBi is currently working with 25+ industry employers and organisations to develop an Apprenticeship for Drinks Dispense Technicians, enabling employers to provide a career pathway for their employees and facilitating Government funding.
